Stripers spawn in the Hudson River from April through early June. The schools are so big and dense that your fishfinder screen will go black, commonly known as a "blackout".
The best fishing usually occurs through the month of May. By then, bass begin stacking up in a 40 mile section of river that stretches from Poughkeepsie to Catskill. This is where the river changes from saltwater to freshwater and where the spawning begins.
A trophy-sized bass is considered as anything over 40 lbs., with a 50 lb fish cause for comment and a trip to the taxidermist. On the Hudson River, the daily limit is one fish and the minimum size is 18 inches. Striped Bass may be caught with live bloodworms or cut herring or eels, but I prefer to fish with artificial lures in order to reduce hooking mortality.
A typical day might see as many as 15 to 25 fish.
